Finn is finally at the age where NPR is not cool. That means every car ride is filled with the music of his choice. Even when I get him good and saturated with radio pop, and try to make a subtle switch to Science Friday, he starts squawking and whining. A man can only take so much Rafi! So, since I control the CD player, I control the music. Luckily Finn and I have a few albums we can both agree are great.
Pappa Dadda picks music after the jump.
Snacktime! Barenaked Ladies (2006)
In the tolerable children's music category, we have Snacktime! by Barenaked Ladies. An oldie (2008), but a goodie.
Legal troubles aside, I have been a fan of Barenaked Ladies since I was a kid (ha ha). If you don't like the whimsy and intelligence in "If I had a million dollars" then I don't want to be your friend.
Snacktime! has all the fun, energetic riffs and airy resonance of a classic BNL album, but they also found an outlet for polishing the sort of short hijinks-y snippets you can hear at the end of 1996s Rock Spectacle. Check out, for example, the two line song "Big sister" or "The Canadian snacktime trilogy: popcorn".
My favorites are the wonderful bluegrass ditty "I can sing" (for some reason, the word "ghetto-blaster" is just less offensive when Canadians sing it), "Here come the geese" (just a heads up, if you are afraid of geese, this song will give you nightmares) and "Pollywog in a bog".
Finn loves the aforementioned "The Canadian snacktime trilogy: popcorn" (yep, I make him say the entire song title before I play it for him), "Polywog in a bog" and the rest of the album.
The 24 tracks are all less than 3 minutes long. I'm not sure if that is bad or good, but they seem to keep Finn's attention and to lodge deeply in my brain.
Adult albums
Some adult favorites that we are really into right now include Lungs (2008) by Florence + The Machine (Check out Embry's famous review of "Dog days are over" on youtube) and Sigh No More (2009) by Mumford and Sons.
Leave your picks in the comments.

He will get to enjoy NPR one day, Luca and I listen to it every day and when they talk about breast implants he says mommy! implants they are talking about implants! like mine! then at that point, I put Raffi on, which he does love and has memorized all his songs by now. You will get to listen to science Fridays one of these days :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't like NPR myself until I was 29. Harper's favorites are: anything by the Rolling Stones (he prefers the old stuff) and The Flaming Lips "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots". My favorite actual children's album is, predictably, Here Comes Science by They Might Be Giants. Adult album: The Head and the Heart (self titled).
